CFO vs Accountant: What Is the Difference for a Malaysian SME?

Different responsibilities, one stronger finance function

Business owners sometimes expect their accountant to handle everything involving money. In practice, accurate accounting and strategic financial leadership are different responsibilities that work best together.

What an accountant typically focuses on

Accountants maintain financial records, prepare accounts, reconcile balances and help ensure transactions are properly reflected. Depending on qualifications and engagement scope, they may also coordinate statutory and tax compliance. Good accounting gives the business dependable information.

What a CFO focuses on

A CFO uses financial information to inform decisions. That can mean managing forward cash requirements, understanding the profitability of different activities, evaluating expansion plans, challenging budgets and preparing management for finance discussions.

An everyday example

Imagine a company reports RM500,000 in monthly sales. The accountant can help establish whether the income and costs have been recorded correctly. A CFO asks why cash collections are slowing, what additional inventory will cost next quarter and whether the company can afford a proposed new branch.

What about a finance manager?

A finance manager often oversees the accounting function, controls and reporting timetable. A CFO typically spends more time on company-wide planning, financing, risk trade-offs and discussions with senior management. Job titles and duties vary widely among SMEs.

Do you need both?

Often, yes—but not necessarily as two full-time appointments. An outsourced CFO can work with an internal accounts team or external accounting provider, provided responsibilities and access to information are agreed in advance.

Questions to ask before appointing support

Who closes the monthly accounts? Who explains results to the owner? Who updates the cash forecast? Who challenges the assumptions behind major spending? The answers make it easier to determine the missing capability.

Keep in mind

Neither role should be described as a substitute for qualified audit or licensed tax-agent work.

The best arrangement is the one that clarifies ownership, keeps reporting reliable and improves decisions.
